Yushi Li's 'My Tinder Boys' is all about vulnerability in casual dating

Photographer and Ph.D. student at the Royal College of Art, Yushi Li uses her medium “as an invasive tool of observing to play with the power relationship inherent in the gaze, and to question the masculinity/femininity opposition in the current age,” as she writes. Li describes herself as a “Chinese woman who takes photographs of naked Western men,” which is exactly what her latest projects, My Tinder Boys and Your Reservation Is Confirmed, entail.

Her work engages with the question of the gaze in relation to gender, desire, and sexuality, culminating in the investigation of the male representation as an erotic subject in light of digital social networks.

I was both the violator who tried to invade their private space and also the desired object.

She messaged more than 300 men on Tinder to make the photographs and was often being asked if there was a chance of sex in return. “I was both the violator who tried to invade their private space and also the desired object. The aim of the project was to create images that focus on the male body as a desirable object seen from a female perspective.”
