20 years ago, TLC addressed cyber-anxiety

TLC captured the feeling of Y2K in ‘Fanmail’. “[The girlsband’s] new record was the first to poeticize the internet and the twin feelings of anxiety and excitement that came with a newly limitless connection.” wrote i-D contributor, Annie Lord.

T-Boz sings about waiting on an email from a man: “I got an email today / I kinda thought that you forgot about me.” / “ Every day I think I’m gonna meet ya / can’t wait ‘til the day I see ya., depicting the feelings of longing and loving in an online world.

In the last interlude of the album, Communicate, Left Eyes sings:

Communication is the key to life

Communication is the key to love

Communication is the key to us

There’s over a thousand ways

To communicate in our world today

And it’s a shame

That we don’t connect

So if you also feel the need

For us to come together

Will you communicate with me?

Message sent.”

It’s no surprise that cyber-anxiety is still topical today, more than ever. Drake addressed this topic in his song I Get Lonely Too (2010): “Just like you / I get lonely too / Just like you”
